A: It started in 1954 as Bill Newland's float-and-fishing business and grew into a riverfront fishing resort. The rentals have fully equipped kitchens, so you can cook your catch or feed a big group, and the cabins have fireplaces and grills. Each cabin's page lists its own amenities. ## Fishing the White River Q: What kind of trout are in the White River below Bull Shoals Dam? A: Rainbow and brown trout. The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission has stocked the Bull Shoals tailwater regularly since 1955. Q: Do I need a fishing license and a trout permit? A: Yes. Anyone 16 or older needs an Arkansas fishing license, plus a trout permit to fish the tailwater below Bull Shoals Lake. Nonresidents can buy a 1-day ($15), 3-day ($30) or annual ($60) license and a $20 trout permit; residents pay $10.50 and $10. Buy them online from the AGFC. Q: How many trout can I keep below Bull Shoals Dam? A: From the dam to Norfork Access, the 2026 limit is 2 rainbow trout a day, 14 inches or shorter, and every other trout must be released. Parts of the river near the dam are catch-and-release or closed at certain times of year. Check the current AGFC regulations before you fish. Q: How do I know if Bull Shoals Dam is generating? A: Check the Southwestern Power Administration's generation schedule or call 866-494-1993. MountainHomeArkansas.com also shows today's schedule and live river levels, updated every 30 minutes. The river can rise quickly once generation starts. Q: How cold is the White River below Bull Shoals Dam? A: Cold all year: about 50 to 62°F on most days, according to the USGS gauge about half a mile from Newland's. Bring layers for the boat, even in summer. Q: Can I fish from the property? A: Yes. The grounds run down to the White River for bank fishing, and some cabins have porches you can walk off to reach the water. Wade only when the river is low and the dam isn't generating. ## The dock and the river Q: Can I bring my own boat to Newland's Lodge? A: Yes. Newland's has its own private boat ramp, dock and covered slips for Newland's owners and guests only, so you can launch and tie up steps from your cabin. Ask your cabin's owner about a slip for your dates. Q: Can you swim off the Newland's dock? A: No. Swimming isn't allowed at the dock. The water below Bull Shoals Dam stays cold all year, and its depth and current change quickly when the dam releases water. ## Things to do nearby MountainHomeArkansas.com is the local guide to the Bull Shoals, Mountain Home and Twin Lakes area: attractions, events, live lake levels and dam generation, and local businesses.
